Here they come again – the Sousa bands, the waving flags, the cheering crowds, and the fabulous fireworks. Ah, yes, it’s Yankee Doodle time again in America.  So let’s get ready to party.

It’s just that I really don’t understand what we’re celebrating.

I don’t really understand why millions of people in this country still pretend that they live in America the Beautiful. I don’t understand why they are not wailing in grief because Yankee Doodle is no longer “dandy.” I don’t understand why there is no widespread sadness about the tragic transformation of their national image.

In fact, in this eighth year of our Bush/PNAC captivity, far too few people in the United States are willing to acknowledge that Yankee Doodle Dandy has now become Yankee Doodle Deadly. The sad truth is that too few people are even remotely aware that the American flag, like Yankee Doodle, has lost every bit of its meaning.

For sure, on this Fourth of July, millions of US flags will be flown as if nothing untoward has happened to the nation they represent. So many Americans have no clue that their flag has lost its glory.  They do not realize that Yankee Doodle – along with any other symbol of the USA – now stands for immoral wars, a shattered Constitution, domestic spying, legalized torture, and corporate greed.

I don’t know who is writing George Bush’s speeches nowadays, but it has to be someone with really serious mental problems. It’s embarrassing enough when this clueless president attempts to speak spontaneously. Left to his own devices, he cannot string together a handful of simple words with any coherent continuity; just as he cannot offer rational responses to questions he apparently is unable to process. But when George Bush has a prepared speech to deliver to an apprehensive audience of 1,500 global policymakers and business leaders in the Middle East, you’d think he would say something intelligent. Think again.

It’s seems almost ridiculous when you do think about it, - but today, the President of these United States sought to lecture men whose cultures he does not understand, and whose history he does not know, and whose societies he has never studied, and whose people view him with distrust and disrespect, on how they should conduct their lives.

At an international conference of Arab notables, this arrogant, unpopular, ineffective, and insensitive man – George W. Bush - dared to pass himself off as a staunch defender of peace and freedom in the world, as well as the reigning champion of political freedom and women’s rights...
It is beyond insanity. Having George Bush lecture anyone about peace and freedom is much like Charles Manson giving a talk on positive group dynamics.

I’ll admit it, I did not remember either. Even though we reported the story last year, so much has happened in Iraq that somehow I, too, had forgotten. The story, like so many others, had been swept under the proverbial rug by the corporate media, and within a day or so the world forgot about the Filipino workers in Iraq.

But a few days ago, I received a personal email from an officer serving in Iraq and housed in the Green Zone, and the story came back to me, full blast. Just a few words in the message reminded me of the forgotten horror that must be added to the countless crimes this administration is committing in Iraq.

This time around, I don’t want the story to become lost in the endless melee of death and destruction that defines this useless war. I just want to put it out into the public consciousness once again, so we don’t simply forget what is going on. This time around, it has to get some real attention.

‘Unpopular’ - un'pop•u•lar - Lacking general approval or acceptance.

Aw, gee.. The American people really don’t approve of the war. They’ve totally forgotten about the death and destruction in Afghanistan, but they just can’t find it in their hearts to give the war in Iraq a thumbs up. What a shame.

It’s so comforting to know that we’re in the midst of what the pundits now call an ‘unpopular war.’ I suppose it’s something like an unpopular brand of toothpaste, - not really terrible, but somewhat unappealing and not quite what the public wants. “It’s not the war, really,” we hear. “It’s the way it was fought.” It’s not the toothpaste either, I imagine, but something about the after taste.

Is it conceivable that that this illegal, immoral war, built on a mountain of lies and deceptions is merely unpopular? Is it possible that the death, the bloodshed, and the hundreds of billions of wasted dollars simply lack the general approval of most Americans?

One has to wonder what would happen in a ‘popular war.’...

Imagine being on the brink of adolescence in the year 2000, - only minimally aware of the world around you, and really not into the foibles of politics or politicians. Life was what it was, and you took it pretty much for granted. In fact, for you and other young teens in 2000; things seemed pretty good and getting better, because you were growing up in the richest and most powerful nation in the whole damn world.

It wasn’t a perfect place, for sure, but it had potential. There were wrongs to be righted, but there was real hope that things would only get better as the years went on. All in all, in the year 2000, being a kid in America was a good thing to be.

Now imagine that it is seven years later and you have just grown into adulthood, and you gradually realize that in a frighteningly short a time your entire world has become unraveled. In just seven years, everything good that once was there is gone, and your country has come apart at the seams before your very eyes.

Really think about these last seven years and recoil at what it actually means to have come of age in Bush’s America,

To assist your reality check, here’s a short list the mind-boggling transformations that have become standard operating procedure in the good old USA.....

Bush aides' use of GOP e-mail probed

WASHINGTON (AP) — The White House said Wednesday it had mishandled Republican Party-sponsored e-mail accounts used by nearly two dozen presidential aides, resulting in the loss of an undetermined number of e-mails concerning official White House business.

Congressional investigators looking into the administration's firing of eight federal prosecutors already had the non-governmental e-mail accounts in their sights because some White House aides used them to help plan the U.S. attorneys' ouster. Democrats were questioning whether the use of the GOP-provided e-mail accounts was proof that the firings were political.

Pretty convenienct coincident, huh?

But come on. I'm not by any stretch an IT professional, but even I know that nearly any deleted file can be recovered unless a real effort has been made to destroy it. This is such a crock.

There is a serial killer living in the White House. He has spent the past six years successfully plotting the deaths of thousands upon thousands of people. Like others who kill without conscience, he remains unmoved by the ongoing bloodshed and destruction he has caused. And now, he is about to do it again.

Someone has to stop George W. Bush before he kills more!

Serial killers sometimes respond to inner voices telling them what to do. George Bush gets personal messages from his God and PNAC. His wars with Afghanistan and Iraq were panned and orchestrated by the war profiteers and ideologues who placed him into office in 2000. The regional chaos they needed to justify American military action in the region is going according to plan, and now the next stage is ready for launching. Any day now, the Bush Doctrine will be used to justify a killing machine that is gearing to attack Iran.

Someone has to stop him before he triggers Armageddon.

By Max Blumenthal -- The Nation

Excerpt:

Before The Path to 9/11 entered the production stage, Disney/ABC signed David Cunningham as the film's director. Cunningham is no ordinary Hollywood journeyman. He is in fact the son of Loren Cunningham, founder of the right-wing evangelical group Youth With A Mission (YWAM). According to Sara Diamond's book Spiritual Warfare, during the 1980's YWAM "sought to gain influence within the Republican party" while assisting authoritarian governments in South Africa and Central America. Cunningham, Diamond noted, was a follower of Christian Reconstructionism, an extreme current of evangelical theology that advocates using stealth political methods to put the United States under the control of Biblical law and jettison the Constitution. Cunningham instilled his radical ideology in young missionaries by sending them to "Discipleship Training School." A former student of Cunningham's school claimed "similarities between cult mind controlling techniques and the [Discipleship Training School] program instituted by YWAM."

My comment today as TvNewsLIES co-editor:

Cronyism At Any Cost, Once Again!

Let’s see if the mainstream media once again ignore the incompetence, the ignorance, and the unmitigated hubris of the man whom President George W. Bush has just nominated to head the CIA. Let’s see if they if they bother to go back just five months to point out the shameless liberties that General Michael Hayden recently took with the content of the US Constitution.

Let’s see if they remind the American people of the statements made by today’s nominee to succeed Porter Goss as head of the agency. Let’s see if they quote his response from a reporter last January, when asked about the NSA warrantless spying being in violation of the fourth amendment.

For the sake of accuracy, here’s the actual exchange between Jonathan Landay of Knight Ridder and General Hayden. The highlights are ours:

For the revealing exchange, and the rest of my blog:

After three years and the death of more than 2,300 American soldiers in Iraq, Congress has yet to consider, debate and vote on alternatives to the President's disastrous course. Alternatives to the Bush stay-the-course policy - including those favored by most of our soldiers stationed in Iraq - have been ignored, and Congressional leaders continue to refuse to allow a full and open debate where all options to the open-ended occupation of Iraq are considered and voted on.

Now, a bi-partisan group of Members of Congress and thousands of Americans across the country are demanding that the House of Representatives immediately begin a debate where ALL alternatives to the failed Bush policy in Iraq are considered and voted on.

With 218 signatures on a petition called House Resolution 543, regular business in the House of Representatives must stop and a 17 hour debate on the Iraq war must immediately begin. The debate will require that Congress consider and vote on all amendments offered as alternatives to the Bush administration's policies in Iraq.

Your member of Congress needs to hear from YOU while home for the April District Work Period - April 10 - 23. Join the national movement to end the Congressional Rubber Stamp for the Bush war in Iraq! Call or visit your Member of Congress TODAY and ask her or him to pledge to sign H. Res 543 upon returning to the U.S. Capitol on April 25.

*****************

Currently, 95 Members of Congress have signed the petition. You can see a list of who has and who has not signed for every state on this Roll Call. We need 218 to force Congressional leaders to allow an open and honest debate and vote on the Iraq war.

Finding your representative's contact information is very simple. Just go to the House Directory and select your state. Calling only takes a few minutes.

These people are suposed to be there to represent US, so speak up and tell them what YOU think is right!

The 9/11 Pentago Attack: Planes Simply Do Not Vaporize - Why Didn’t They Show Us the Wreckage?

Planes do not simply vaporize. Never in the history of aviation disasters has an aircraft ever totally disintegrated. Even exploding space shuttles did not vanish into thin air. Therefore, it stands to reason that whatever hit the Pentagon had to leave some recoverable debris in its wake. Surely, there had be enough identifiable rubble remaining from a 110,000 ton aircraft to satisfy the skeptics?

I caught a part of the Today show while I was getting ready for school this morning, and they were doing an interview/special with Hugh Grant about the upcoming movie American Dreamz.

While the interview was decent, and the movie is probably worth seeing, the show blatantly did not convey to the viewers that the main point of the movie is to satire the American government and the American Dream, and that the parody of the American Idol television show is merely a superficial storyline.

Katie Couric did briefly ask Hugh Grant at the end of the bit whether he thought the satire of president Bush "was too much," and Grant, in a very polite and British-gentlemanly manner, effictively said: 'No. F- you Katie Couric.'

That made me smile.

So the AFA is doing an online poll on illegal immigration and trying to be all serious about it, stating that they'll send the results "to Speaker of the House Dennis Hastert, Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist, and President George Bush." Their solution to illegal immigration? "The first step in dealing with the illegal immigration problem is to seal the borders and keep additional illegal immigrants out."

Of course, it'd be a shame if their poll turned out not to be one-sided...

Less, if you're not that chatty. In five minutes, you can speak up for the rule of the law. In five minutes, you can put your own footprint in history, as one of the mass of millions who advocated for the censure of a President who broke the law. Years from now, no matter what the outcome, you can look back and say you stood up when Congress stood down, you pushed your party forward no matter how much it wanted to cower back in the shadows. Are you ready?

Today, I ask each of you to take a few minutes and contact your Senator and ask them to sign on as a co-sponsor to Senator Russ Feingold's censure resolution. You can find your Democratic Senator's full contact info, including fax and local numbers, here. If you don't have any Democratic Senators, please call Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid-- he's your leader too, and ask him to help hold the President accountable for his crimes.

CONTACT INFO LINK

Talking points:

The President admitted to conducting a domestic spying program outside the scope of FISA, despite knowing that FISA is the exclusive means of such surveillance inside the United States. President Bush broke the law, and this is the only way this Republican Congess can hold him accountable.

President admitted he did not brief the full intelligence committees. This is against the law.

We don't have to wait for an investigation before censure. President Bush admitted to his crimes publicly. An investigation is needed, but that should not preclude censure at this time.

Andrew Jackson was censured in 1834 for refusing to hand over papers to Congress and assuming power not granted by the Constitution. With his stonewalling of the investigation and by ignoring FISA, this is exactly what President Bush has done, and he should also be censured accordingly.

Five minutes is all it takes. Now get on the phone and let's show this administration that some people still gave a damn about the Constitution.

Thank you.

So when Sandra Day O'Connor is talking about the need for vigilance in avoiding a dictatorship, no one says anything about it???

"Linking the words "America" and "dictatorship" is a daily staple of leftwing blogs, which thrive on the idea that Bush administration policies since 9/11 are taking the country ever closer to totalitarian rule. Liberal fears that democracy is endangered by Republicans in Congress are so widespread, so endemic to the jittery political climate in the US, that they hardly bear repeating. It'll surprise no one to learn that another voice was added to the chorus last Thursday, warning that recent attacks on the American judiciary were putting the democratic fabric in jeopardy and were the first steps down the treacherous path to dictatorship.

What is surprising - more than that, electrifying - is that the voice belonged to Sandra Day O'Connor, who retired a few weeks ago from the supreme court. O'Connor is a Republican and a Reagan nominee. Regarded as the "swing vote" on the court, she swung the presidential election to George Bush in 2000."

At this very minute, the people who are in charge of the government of the United States of America believe that no rules apply to them. They believe that religion can be used to control society and that human rights do not apply to them. They do not have to follow the laws that all other citizens must respect, and they openly believe that evil is acceptable if deemed necessary to achieve their goals.

I recently found myself wondering if the cheering masses in attendance at Hitler's infamous Nuremburg rally included the general population of ordinary Germans; or were they all carefully vetted card-carrying members of The Party?

If the latter, and if there had been nationwide broadcast television coverage, what would the ordinary Germans at home have thought of the sight of their countrymen's "patriotic" display of fervor as they cheered their "democratically elected" despot to ever-higher pinnacles of megalomania and euphemized bloodthirst?

Even before the carnage that was to follow, what might they have felt? Would they have been terrified? Ashamed? Or might their response have been something even more dreadfully familiar?

Silently passing your time in the grasslands away,
Only dimly aware of a certain unease in the air...

Well, I've looked over Jordan, and I've seen...

What might it have taken to alert them to the tragic patterns of history that were poised yet again to play out at a cost of millions of human lives?

Is there anything that could have awakened them in time, anything at all?

Meek and obedient
You follow-the-leader
Down well-trodden corridors
Into the Valley of Steel...

What a surprise!
A look of terminal shock in your eyes!
Now things ARE really what they seem!
Nooo - this is no bad dream...

Just a few things for US to ponder while we helplessly watch tonight's State Of The #uckup address.

Forgive me, I'll be off on a bit of a tangent here...
And no, I'm not saying I agree 100% with this Belafonte guy... But I'm watching CNN right now, and watching Belafonte be interrogated regarding his comments he made about Bush and the current administration, regarding the "War on Terror" and things of that nature.
One thing that stood out to me was this. They were talking about "Terrorism" and the difference between Al Quada (sp?) attacking the US and killing innocent people, and the US killing innocent people. The act of terror was brought up, defined. Who was more right, or justified, was brought up... But this is what got to me... The guy (Sorry I'm not up on all the news anchors) said to Belafonte, "You can't tell me that Bin Laden was not trying to kill as many civilians as possible in his attacks..." Now that is paraphrased because I don't have a photographic memory. He tried to point out that the US is only having "casualties of war" and that civilains are not individually targetted. Here is what I think. I think that when we were attacked, yeah, that sucked, yes, it was wrong and very bad. HOWEVER, it was very intelligent planning (I'M NOT SAYING I AGREE WITH IT!!!) They targeted the Pentagon (military), The White House (Government), and the World Trade Center (our central economic system as well as a huge symbol of power). Those are the primary reasons they were targetted. They did not target churches, schools, hospitals... I think that YES, they did kill a lot of people, but I do not believe that was their main point. I've watched a ton of documentaries on the world trade centers and the flights that all went down, and from what I have seen, the passangers were not harmed (yeah I know they were murdered, but they were not terrorized in the process, that was not the aim). Many of the terrorists even apologized to the passangers and told them to call home and tell their loved ones that they loved them, etc. Casualties of War???
I'm not defending the terrorists, not at all, I think everything they did was horrible, and I will never back anything they have done.
On the flip side though. I do recognize the US and western interference in the middle east, and all of the problems we have caused to the islamic, muslim and arab world. What right do we have? Who are we to tell them how to live? Because of our constant pressures and influences there, that is why we have been targeted.
We're constantly spoon fed this, "they hate Americans and our way of life..." They hate "Christian" interference in their culture, traditions, and beliefs and values. Remember The Crusades? I think they've a bit of a reason to feel burned by the west. To be honest, I wouldn't trust us, nor like us either, if my "people" had thousands of years of "terror" being inflicted upon us because we were different and didn't want to change our beliefs to suit those of our attackers.
My two cents. I know I'll get flamed, but this all just got me thinking, and I don't think any side is right here. I wish people could just back down and say, "ya know what? I fucked up, I'm sorry." Pride... Look what it's doing to the world. Sad.
