GEORGE BUSH HOSTS A TEA PARTY!

And what a party it was! It actually made page ten of the NY Times, and that’s pretty impressive nowadays for anything involving George Bush’s war. Did you happen to see the guest list? Wow! Really wow!

The folks on the guest list were the most powerful and possibly the best and the brightest ever to work alongside American presidents going back nearly half a century. These dignified men and women were 13 former secretaries of state and defense, all of whom undeniably had a vast range of experience and knowledge about war and peace. They came to share what they knew. But they came to Wonderland.

Oh, what a lovely photo op it turned out to be: The Hatter, Dick Cheney, Donald Rumsfeld and Condoleezza Rice surrounded by history. The names were so terribly impressive: Powell, Cohen, Albright, McNamara, Schlesinger, Schultz, Haig, Carlucci, Perry, Brown, Eagleburger and Baker. They had served presidents from JFK to their present host. These were the real heavyweights of government. They came to pass on their wisdom and their expertise in a time of terrible chaos.

They came for tea, but they got baloney.

Much more....

Even though the Democrats are kicking the Republican's asses all over Washington this week, I am still upset that there are 3 more years of this. They can do so much damage in 3 more years. At least we're winning on the PATRIOT act and drilling the caribou in ANWR at the moment. But how much can we take of his "Leave No Tree Behind" environmental policy?

I heard on Air America today that Bush & co are trying to bring about the rapture by basically making our world as big a shithole as possible.

What do you guys do to deal with your anger? I usually direct my frustration into blogs like http://www.dailykos.com or daily_granola and creating Daily Granola's website. Today that's not enough to get me through though. I'm still really mad.

I bought 5 houseplants from a local gardening store today, and the lady who helped me was really nice and knowledgable and thanked me for not going to a Big Box store. I thanked her for being an alternative option to a Big Box Store. So there's what I did for the environment and progressive causes for the day. Take that Rapture Right!

The Religious Right's Phony 'War on Christmas': Mything in Action
Religious Right leaders and their allies in the right-wing news media claim there is a “war on Christmas.” To prove their charge, they have rolled out a series of allegations involving bias against Christmas by government officials and public schools. Researchers at Americans United for Separation of Church and State looked into the most common examples of supposed hostility toward Christmas and found them largely baseless.

No one here can forget the spectacle made over the death of Terri Schiavo, whose brain had died long, long ago. But in Texas, the law George W. Bush signed as governor allows doctors to inform the family that further treatment is hopeless (and costly) and Pull the Plug. Literally.

In the latest case to escape the Culture of Life warriors, Tirhas Habtegiris, a young woman and legal immigrant from Africa, was CONSCIOUS and responsive when removed from a respirator and allowed to die.

Let me rephrase that: She was killed by doctors who removed the ventilator keeping her alive. And this action was fully legal under Bush's "economic considerations" law. Her body was ravaged by cancer, but she was alert. She was responsive.

She wasn't white.

Conservative Christians Say Fighting Cuts in Poverty Programs Is Not a Priority
When hundreds of religious activists try to get arrested today to protest cutting programs for the poor, prominent conservatives such as James Dobson, Pat Robertson and Jerry Falwell will not be among them.

That is a great relief to Republican leaders, who have dismissed the burgeoning protests as the work of liberals. But it raises the question: Why in recent years have conservative Christians asserted their influence on efforts to relieve Third World debt, AIDS in Africa, strife in Sudan and international sex trafficking -- but remained on the sidelines while liberal Christians protest domestic spending cuts?

Conservative Christian groups such as Focus on the Family say it is a matter of priorities, and their priorities are abortion, same-sex marriage and seating judges who will back their position against those practices.

"It's not a question of the poor not being important or that meeting their needs is not important," said Paul Hetrick, a spokesman for Focus on the Family, Dobson's influential, Colorado-based Christian organization. "But whether or not a baby is killed in the seventh or eighth month of pregnancy, that is less important than help for the poor? We would respectfully disagree with that."

Pilgrimage to Guantánamo

On December 7 twenty-five Christians set out from Santiago de Cuba on a seventy-mile pilgrimage to Guantánamo Bay. Their mission is simple: to meet with more than 500 men who have been held without trial, virtually incommunicado, for nearly four years. If they are turned away, they will fast in support of Guantánamo's hunger strikers and hold a three-day vigil at the prison gates.

Oil industry targets EU climate policy

Documents obtained by Greenpeace and seen by the Guardian reveal a systematic plan to persuade European business, politicians and the media that the EU should abandon its commitments under the Kyoto protocol, the international agreement that aims to reduce emissions that lead to global warming. The disclosure comes as United Nations climate change talks in Montreal on the future of Kyoto, the first phase of which expires in 2012, enter a critical phase.

The documents, an email and a PowerPoint presentation, describe efforts to establish a European coalition to "challenge the course of the EU's post-2012 agenda". They were written by Chris Horner, a Washington DC lawyer and senior fellow at the rightwing thinktank, the Competitive Enterprise Institute, which has received more than $1.3m (£750,000) funding from the US oil giant Exxon Mobil. Mr Horner also acts for the Cooler Heads Coalition, a group set up "to dispel the myth of global warming".

Abuse 'widespread' in Iraqi prisons

After a US raid on a secret Iraqi government jail last month revealed some detainees were tortured and abused there, Interior Minister Bayan Jabr insisted abuse claims were exaggerated and that torture will not be tolerated in the new Iraq.

US soldiers and some Iraqi officials disagree. They say not only is prisoner abuse widespread, but that much of it is carried out by Mr. Jabr's subordinates. Efforts to bring the problem under control during the past year have largely been frustrated by indifference from senior Iraqi officials, they say.

Privately, half a dozen US officers have acknowledged to the Monitor that prisoner abuse by Iraqi police is common.

Wait, wasn't this the sort of thing we were 'liberating' Iraq from?

Complicated Accomplishment

Whether I'm a good man is, of course, for God to judge. I know that I am not as good as my strongest supporters believe or as I hope to become, nor as bad as my harshest critics assert.

William J.Clinton

Little more than a year and half ago in the middle of the war in Iraq, straggling economy, and presidential campaign in the USA, a tremendous amount of media attention was devoted to a seemingly unimportant matter – a book. Moreover, this interest was not limited to isolated from "regular people" media establishment – according to Steven Zeitchik, writing for Publishers Weekly, " two million people were willing to buy a book that carried a list price of $35" (19).

What could make a nonfiction book containing 957 pages with a weight of three and half pounds such so appealing to readers? The answer is simple – it written by a greatly popular and controversial person. In addition, that person used to be the President of the United States. His name is William J. Clinton. Every American should watch this.
and this, concentrating on the Pentagon.

Everyone, this is at least worth thinking about. I know that through it all I always wondered why I thought our country was more in control, had better security and had more intelligence.

Because it does.

Maybe this is why we haven't had an attack since. No one knows why we haven't. Especially after seeing the incompetence with Katrina. We've just been told that security has changed since 9/11. But really.. it looks like it's up to ourselves to find out the truth.

Does God Want YOU To Be a Success?

Are you kidding me? Whatever happened to "The meek shall inherit the Earth" or "It is easier for a camel to go through a needle's eye, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God."

Is George W. Bush insane?

Shaath, now the Palestinian information minister, said: "President Bush said to all of us: 'I'm driven with a mission from God.

'God would tell me, 'George, go and fight those terrorists in Afghanistan'.'

"And I did, and then God would tell me, 'George, go and end the tyranny in Iraq...' And I did.

The irony here is just mind-blowing: Bush: Militants Seek to Intimidate World

In a speech before the National Endowment for Democracy, Bush likened the ideology of Islamic militants to communism. And he said they are being "aided by elements of the Arab news media that incites hatred and anti-Semitism."

"Against such an enemy, there's only one effective response: We never back down, never give in and never accept anything less than complete victory," Bush declared.

So what makes what we're doing 'right'?

Hi...thank goodness I found this community. I have only been a livejournal user for a few weeks. The following is my latest livejournal entry:

"I am a LIBERAL LIBERAL LIBERAL LIBERAL and damn proud of it!!!!!!!!!!!! (And I hope you read this, George W. and Pat Buchanan and Robert Bork----and I have another message for you three--(deleted in the interest of politeness). And just one more thing...Jesus was a liberal."

I thought that would be an appropriate introduction, especially considering the cool name of this group :). As you can see, I need someone to talk to about things that bother me. Glad to be here!!
